Game of the Round | R15

14-Jul-2017

Goondiwindi Emus vs Toowoomba Rangers | Saturday 15th July

This weeks Game of the Round will see the Toowoomba Rangers venture out to Riddles Oval to take on the Goondiwindi Emus for their Ladies Day. With the Dalby Wheatmen having a bye this Round, Goondiwindi Emus will be looking to jump back into 1st place on the ladder where the 4 points for a win will equal them at the top of the ladder. Goondiwindi are a slight margin ahead in for and against, therefore they will be back in the number 1 spot after a win. The 3rd place, Toowoomba Rangers will aim to close the 7 point gap between themselves and the Goondiwindi Emus to avoid being overtaken by the Toowoomba Bears who are sitting 1 point behind in the 4th spot. The last time Emus and Rangers met was in Round 5 at Gold Park where a full strength, steam training Goondiwindi Emu side ran away with 33 points to the Rangers 15. Toowoomba Rangers have improved significantly since this clash and will be determined to prove they deserve a spot in the top 3 Wagners Wellcamp Risdon Cup Competition.

With the bulk of the Queensland Country Heelers returning to the Goondiwindi Emus side after their representative duties, the squad is nearly at full strength with the exception of Jack Cook and Will Gilbert. The Emus backline is still swift and agile as ever with the complement taking 7 tries in the previous week with 3 going to inside centre Harry Hawker. Speedy winger, Tom Jobling also picked up 2 tries with his blistering pace which will put his opposition to the test. Pierce Saunders will be managing this backline from flyhalf and is provenly capable of turning opposition inside out with each set piece. The Goondiwindi second row is at full strength with returning Heelers Lachlan Tulloch and Sam Tweedy back in their favoured positions which will boost the Emu scrum and forward morale throughout the pack. This menacing squad are determined to cement their spot at the top of the ladder to take out the A Grade Minor Premiership leading into the 2017 Finals Series.

The Rangers squad have been performing phenomenally in the later half of this season only being defeated by Dalby last weekend in their past 8 matches played. The Rangers backline led by Matthew Lyons at flyhalf have been lightning all season from set piece in attack to their brick wall defence. Returning Queensland Country Heeler Colt, Lachie Sperling, has made a major impact this season at full back as a young athlete capable of making try saving tackles and busting the line with ball in hand. The forward pack has remained consistent this season with veteran players such as Nick Leggat, Keiran Wagstaff and Stuart Bougoure all making regular appearances and outstanding efforts. This squad will have tunnel vision for finishing the season aiming to get as many points under their belt in attempt to make the top of the ladder.

Do not miss this clash out in Goondiwindi with Ladies Day festivities and this top 3 match-up kicking off at 3:00pm at Riddles Oval!
