Game of the Round - R9 Preview

01-Jun-2018

The Potters Toowoomba #GameOfTheRound will see cross town rivals Toowoomba Bears and Toowoomba Rangers battle in a match that is set to shape the top 5 as we hit the halfway point of the season.

Rangers (5th) sit just one win above Bears (6th) and with round 9 marking the halfway point of the season, competition for top 5 spots is heating up. Pending other results from this weekend, a win to Rangers could see them go to as high as 3rd, whilst a Bears win would see them go into equal 5th spot with Rangers, separated only by points differential.

The Rangers side will be fresh after a double bye following rep rugby two weeks ago, and their general bye last weekend, however will need to be weary of getting back into gear and will want to ensure they get off to a fast start. They will be missing hooker Rob Paterson and young gun Clayton Clinch who are on South Queensland Representative duties this weekend in Townsville, however have named a well rounded side for the round 9 clash. The return of fullback Tom Caskey has seen young gun Mal Grealy move to 9, who will be guided by one of the competitions leading point scorers in Brandon Murray at flyhalf.

The 6/7/8 combination of Adam Maxwell and Bougoure brothers Matt and Stu, gives Rangers a very mobile and dangerous back row, which the Bears pack will no doubt be wanting to get on top of early.

Bears will be hoping for a better start this weekend, after letting Condamine get out to a 37 - 3 lead at half time last weekend. It was a cliche tail of two halves which saw the Bears kick into gear to win the second half 21-8 showing they have plenty of attacking prowess, but was too little to late seeing the Bears go down 45-24.

The Bears are also affected by South Queensland representatives unavailable this weekend, with leading point scorer George Andreas and utility back James Bailey both selected in the SQ Colts team travelling north today. Bears do however welcome back Damian Vagg, who slots into a youthful backline with young guns Sam Stanford and Declan Wheeler having very impressive years and will be a handful for the Rangers backs.

Recent form shows that there is not much between the two sides, and this local derby will no doubt produce a cracking game of Rugby. Round 9 will see the Bears host their old boys day, which begins with B Grade kicking off at 1pm, with an under 12 match at 2.30pm before the main game at 3.30pm.
