Potters Game Of The Round - A Grade Elim Final

The #GameoftheRound proudly sponsored by Potters Hotel Toowoomba. Throughout the year Downs Rugby Media will preview the biggest match ups of the Wagners Risdon Cup each week.

The A Grade elimination final will see the 4th place Toowoomba Rangers battle it out with 5th place Condamine Cods at Dalby’s John Ritter Oval tomorrow afternoon.

The two sides have met in the 2018 season, with both games being physical and entertaining for the spectators with the both sides looking to chance their hand at any opportunity with over 50 points being scored in both matches earlier in the season. Rangers have won the last 3 games against Condamine including a 9 point victory in last year’s Semi Final, the Cods will be looking for redemption this weekend and will be hoping to get one back on them in tomorrow’s fixture and end their 2018 season. Rangers will be determined to make sure this isn’t an option and that they continue their winning streak over this Cods outfit to progress through to the semi-finals.

Condamine are coming off an inspiring victory last weekend against the 3rd placed USQ Saints, the Condamine boy surged home after the siren to snatch a 3 point win from the Uni students at their home ground. After going down to the Rangers’ in round 13 Condamine will be coming will be confident after coming off the win last weekend and will be hoping to get out to an early lead against the Toowoomba boys and put them on the back foot early. The Cods have a knack of generating quick ball which quickly gets the oppositions defence going backwards and opens up a number of holes in the defensive line allowing the Cods to get their speed men involved and rack up numerous line breaks. The Cods defence will be key in tomorrow’s as they sit in forth for points conceded throughout the year,  this aspect of the game has won Condamine the majority of their games this year as they have been able to build immense pressure on their opposition and capitalise while in attack.

The forwards will be key for Condamine this weekend as they look to step it up to match the strong and mobile forward pack Rangers have, James Guest has been in outstanding form and as usual will look to make a difference in tomorrow’s match. Fellow front rowers Brett Bidstrup and Sam Warby will look to match the performance of James as all are strong ball carriers and can get over the advantage line with each run. Angus Smith moves from fullback back into flyhalf with young gun Rory McHugh shifting into fullback, Angus will look to be the general for his team tomorrow steering them in the right direction and will be instrumental if his side is to win tomorrow. Speedster Rory McHugh will be a handful for the Rangers defence and will look to counter attack at every opportunity.

Rangers have again named a quality side this weekend, where once again their main threat will be their big and mobile forward pack. Coming off a tough game last weekend against the undefeated Emu’s, the Rangers will be looking to get back into the winners circle in tomorrow’s fixture and play to their strengths.  Rangers will look to dominate at scrum time and set a solid platform for their slick backline to get them over the advantage line with dangerous outside centre Dhams Raratabu working his magic. The Toowoomba boys will be hoping their big men can step up for the occasion with U19’s representative player of the year Clayton Clinch and fellow second rower Johannes Steyn both very dangerous ball runners they will have the chance to penetrate the Cods defensive line and potentially create a number of line breaks for the backs by drawing a number of Cods players into the breakdown.

The star studded backrow in Rob Paterson, Stu and Matt Bougoure will once again be a force to be reckoned with and could quite well be the difference in the game if they are to combine well as a unit for the Rangers. The combination from 9 and 10 will be very influential in the Rangers performance tomorrow as both players have great vision and can snatch an opportunity as soon as it arises.

Rangers fullback Cormack Ebbage will play an important role in tomorrow’s game with plenty of communication in defence and a livewire in attack, Cormack will have the opportunity to carve the Condamine’s defence apart if he is given a sniff an opening. He will line up against young Rory McHugh who will also play a similar role for the Cods and this will most likely be the key match-up for the game.

A Grade Elimination Final will be played late in the afternoon with a 4.30pm kick-off scheduled for Saturdays match.
