Potters Game of the Round (Rd14)

06-Jul-2018

The #GameoftheRound proudly sponsored by Potters Hotel Toowoomba. Throughout the year Downs Rugby Media will preview the biggest match ups of the Wagners Risdon Cup each week.

Round 14 will see two sides who are in rebuilding or in Highfields case building phases as both teams have struggled throughout the year but coming into the back end of the season both sides have improved dramatically and are pushing top 4 sides. We will see Roma make the trek in to take on the Highfields Redbacks at Highfields Sports Complex.

Both sides didn’t have the best starts to the season, coming off some heart breaking thrashings from quality sides in the early rounds Roma and Highfields have shown persistence and courage as the benefits are slowly paying off in the last few rounds. The Echidnas and the Redbacks met in round 8 where the two sides were looking for their first wins, it was a tight contest full of running rugby coming to the end of the game Highfields were leading 17-10 before the Echidnas never say die attitude kicked in as they found the try line just inches in the from the sideline after the 80th minute. It appeared Highfields had most likely still won the game with a difficult conversion still to come. Veteran and Downs over 35 representative Matthew Edwards stood up and delivered pin point conversion to tie the game 17-all. Both sides were happy to get their first competition points of the season but were disappoint as they were still searching for their first wins of the 2018 campaign.

Highfields have been in dangerous form in recent weeks and will be looking to get their first win of the season this weekend, the Redbacks will look to dangerous Number 8 Josaia Qalotaki to get the team moving forward in while in possession of the ball. Josaia is a brutal but agile Number 8 who loves contact but can also cut holes into opposition defences, watch him combine well with outside centre Sevanaia Cirikisuva who is lightning quick with dangerous footwork both players have a great ability to offload while in contact and this will help get the Redbacks on the front foot. In previous fixtures Highfields travelled out to Condamine to take on the Cods where they gave the home side a scare narrowly going down 38-28 and improved out of sight after going down 76-7 to Rangers in round 1 Highfields they lost 45-25 in their last fixture against them. Highfields will be fresh off the bye and will be hungry to get the win on the weekend.

Roma are in a very similar situation to Highfields and will be looking to bounce back positively this weekend after a gut wrenching 86-0 flogging against Dalby last weekend where the home side were just too good.  Roma will welcome back young gun and QLD Country U19 Cooper Dingle, Cooper is a big bodied kid who can penetrate defensive lines with his big ball carries but also make is presence felt while in defence with big hits. Roma will look to Cooper and Captain Thomas Sheridan to get them on the front foot and provide dangerous flyhalf Liam Walker with quality ball, Liam is electrifying with ball in hand and has the ability to step off both feet which cuts defensive lines open. Liam also has great vision which will give him and Roma the ability to play field position with his kicking game but great a number of attacking opportunities with his crisp pass. The Echidnas will be looking for redemption this weekend and will also be hungry for their first win of the year.

Pat Neville at 10 for Highfields will be key for his side providing an experienced head in a young side will benefit his team on the weekend as he will look to steer his team in the right direction on the weekend. He will mark up against mercurial flyhalf Liam Walker and this will most likely be the key match-up for the day, both players will be extremely influential if their side is to get the win this weekend.

A Grade will be played in the afternoon with a 3pm kick-off scheduled for Saturday’s match, With the B grade match kicking off at 1:30pm.
