Potters Game of the Round (rd3)

13-Apr-2018

The #GameoftheRound proudly sponsored by Potters Hotel Toowoomba. Throughout the year Downs Rugby Media will preview the biggest match ups of the Wagners Risdon Cup each week.

Round 3 will see two of the most dominant country sides battle it out at the notorious Riddles Oval this weekend at Goondiwindi.

In 2017, both sides finished in the top 3 and met early in the season round 4 where the Emus cruised home to a 59-0 win Riddles Oval, but the Cods had a shot at redemption in round 13 where they rose for the occasion winning 22-21 at the Fish Tank.

Goondiwindi will be firing early this year as they chasing another Risdon Cup victory after going down in the last two finals. The Emus were up for the task in round 1 this year, where they managed to pile on a half century against USQ and walking away with a 52-14 win over the Saints. Goondiwindi will be dangerous in the backline on Saturday and will know how to create opportunities out of nothing.

Goondiwindi will look to get go forward off representative backrowers Lachie Tulloch and Levi Power while providing dominant ball carries, these two men will produce some of the biggest hits throughout the game. The Emus backline has a number of attacking threats but lookout for Harry Hawker and George Stacey with electric footwork the boys will create plenty of opportunities.

Condamine are also coming off a successful 2017 and will be looking  to go a couple of games further this year for their 20 reunion . The cods  will be happy with their win over Highfields in round 2 scoring  44 points in their first hit out of the season.

Young Charlie Friend will be key for the Cods with slick footwork he will look to break the defensive line and give Cods front football.

Young flyhalf Angus Smith will be key for Cods, after a strong season last year and plenty of football experience he can create opportunities off the cuff and will prove to be a real attacking threat to the Emus defensive line. Angus will match up against the experienced Michael Jamieson and this will mostly likely be the key matchup for the day. As both five eights prove to be livewires the game is set to be entertaining running rugby for a large crowd at Riddles  Oval.

A Grade will be played in the afternoon with a 3pm kick-off scheduled for Saturdays match, with B Grade kicking off at 1:30pm and C Grade kicking off the afternoons fixtures at 12:15pm.
