Potters game of the Round (rd6)

The 2018 #GameoftheRound is proudly sponsored by Potters Hotel Toowoomba and throughout the year Downs Rugby Media will preview the biggest match ups of the Wagners Risdon Cup each week.

Round 5 will see two Toowoomba rivals battle it out at USQ Rugby Oval this weekend when the USQ Saints host the Toowoomba Rangers for their 50th year celebration weekend.

Both sides have had reasonable starts to the season, both showing two losses to top 4 sides. The two sides met early last year in a round 6 nail biter where Rangers gave a heartbreaking penalty away after fulltime, which saw USQ steal a 31-29 victory. In round 14 Rangers hadn’t forgotten the past and came out firing to blow the Saints out of the park 36-7.

USQ have got out to a solid start this year winning 2 from 4 and will only be looking to improve those figures on the weekend.  They are however coming off a gut wrenching loss to the Cods in Round 5, where the two sides played out a brutal 80 minutes of Rugby, which saw the Saints go down by one point 6-5 away at Chinchilla. USQ's shoulders will be warm and ready in what is set to be another physical battle against the Rangers this weekend.

USQ will look to get across the gain line through mobile centres Eddie Mccorley and Andre Van Staden. Mccorley is quick and has electrifying footwork watch him catch defenders off guard and create something from nothing. Van Staden will cause havoc out wide and will look to use his size and ball skills to be a threat to the Rangers defensive line.

Rangers are tracking for another successful season and have won 3 from 5 with both of their losses coming from top 2 sides. Rangers faced the Goondiwindi Emus last year round and put in a solid performance against the classy side but the Emu’s were just too good for the travelling side winning 54-20. Rangers will be looking to turn things around this weekend and to get back into the winners circle.

Rangers will look to get the ball in the hands of dominant players Robert Paterson and Number 8 Fraser Donaldson; these two will be the cornerstone for the Bulls defence and will hopefully be able to hush what is set to be a large USQ Old Boy’s crowd.  Outside Centre Adam Berthelsen will look to use his pace and footwork out wide to cause disruptions in USQ’s defence.

It will be a battle of the 13’s this weekend as the experienced takes on the youth. Saints Andre Van Staden will produce damaging runs from outside centre and has a slick off-loading game that gets the defence on the back foot, he will line up against young Rangers 13 Adam Berthelsen and this will most likely be the key matchup for the game. Adam is young and and agile but his defence his brutal and his attack has caused issues for many back lines in the competition. Both players have a lot of experience and will be looking to give their sides the upper hand on the weekend.

USQ’s 50th year celebrations will see a full day of Rugby on the cards, with the A Grade to be played in the afternoon with a 3:30pm kick-off scheduled for Saturday’s match. The day will also feature a past players match kicking off at 2:45pm and Women’s kicking the Seniors fixtures off at 10:20am .
