Potters Game of the Round (Rd7)

The #GameoftheRound proudly sponsored by Potters Hotel Toowoomba. Throughout the year Downs Rugby Media will preview the biggest match ups of the Wagners Risdon Cup each week.

Round 7 will see two country sides battle it out at Condamine’s famous Fish Tank this weekend.

Both sides have had reasonable starts to the season, with Cods showing two losses to top 3 sides and the Wheatmen going undefeated the season so far. The two sides met in round 1 of last year’s campaign where Dalby were too good for the home side and drove away with a 37-10 victory. Condamine haven’t beaten Dalby in their last 3 encounters but will be looking to break that record this weekend.

The Cods have got out to a successful start to the 2018 season and are currently sitting 4th place with; 3rd, 4th and 5th place all sitting on 14 points. Condamine have won 3 games from 5 so far this season with Dalby in their swimming hole this weekend they will be looking to make it 4 from 6. The Cods are coming off a win before their bye last weekend so spirits will be high and players will be fresh. In round 5 Condamine proved that you don’t have to score tries to win games but take opportunities when you can, kicking two penalty goals got the side a win against USQ. Condamine will be looking to use the accurate boot of young Cod Lachie Smith when the can to keep the score board ticking over on the weekend against the Wheatmen.

The Cods will look to experienced campaigner Sonny Power and powerful hooker Sam Warby to get their side on the front foot through damaging ball carries and brutal defence.  Lookout for workhorse Bryce Moore who will be quietly achieving the 1 percenters to give his side the edge in a tough battle against Dalby.

Dalby are tracking for another dominant season this year and have not lost a game in first 6 rounds. Coming off a large 94-0 victory over Highfields on the weekend the sides confidence will be high but know they can’t get ahead of themselves as the Cods will be dying to cause an upset this weekend. Dalby have the ability to score tries from anywhere on the field and have proved that this year scoring 315 points in just 5 games so far, their defence can’t be faulted either conceding only 32 points. The Wheatmen will work hard off the ball to create opportunities from nothing and will look to put their opposition under severe pressure in defence and force the error.

The Wheatmen will be looking to Captain Sam Hogarth to be physical upfront this weekend and work hard alongside flanker Hugh Brosnan to wreak havoc in Cods attack. Dalby will look to get clean ball off strong ball carries from inside centre James Wreford.

It will be a battle of the 13’s this weekend as the youthful but experienced players will battle it out in the 13 Channel. Cods Charlie Friend will provide great attacking opportunities with quick footwork at the line he will be getting Condamine on the front foot, he will mark up against Wheatmen’s 13 Will Walton and this will most likely be the key matchup of the game. Dalby outside centre Will Walton is coming off a scintillating performance scoring 5 tries last weekend. Will is big bodied and very quick, he will look to get on the outside of his opponent and be an attacking threat for Dalby. Both players have a lot of experience and will be looking to give their sides the upper hand on the weekend.

A Grade will be played in the afternoon with a 3:00pm kick-off scheduled for Saturday’s match, with B grade at 1:30pm and C grade kicking off the day’s fixtures at 12:15pm.
