2017 Grand Final of the Wagners Wellcamp Risdon Cup is here!

25-Aug-2017

THE CULMINATION OF DOWNS RUGBY'S 2017 SEASON | GRAND FINAL

To win a Grand Final in any sporting code represents the several hundred hours of training and preparation throughout the season, facing teams week in and week out for your club. The 2017 Wagners Wellcamp Risdon Cup is no different and many of the players who have competed throughout the season have played their whole careers without a Grand Final finish, let alone taking home the premiership. Downs Rugby is ecstatic to announce that the Grand Final day will be taking place at the Toowoomba Sports Ground on September 2nd. The day will be filled with action and activities for families and friends of all sorts with the Queensland Reds operating a Rookies 2 Reds area for the kids from 1:00pm with plenty of activities to get involved in. The Bar will be operating from 11am in time for C Grade along with food and drinks available from the canteen and other various food stalls around the ground.

The C Grade Grand Final will be the first event of the day kicking off at 11:20am with the Goondiwindi Emus taking on the Chinchilla River Rats. Both sides have worked relentlessly to make it this far in the season and neither will be letting their guard down to give the opposition an advantage.

Next up at 12:45 will be the Women's Rugby 7's Preliminary Final match up between the Warwick Water Rats and the Dalby Wheatchix. For both of these sides first season on the Rugby field, both have exceeded their own expectations and come firing out of the blocks at every carnival throughout the year. Warwick Water Rats finished on the top spot of the season ladder only 1 point in front of both Dalby and Toowoomba Bears so it is clear that these sides are of equal talent; this match will come down to who wants it most.

The B Grade men will take the field at 1:10pm seeing Dalby Wheatmen taking on the Toowoomba Rangers. The Wheatmen had an exceptional season and secured a marginal win over the Goondiwindi Emus at Super Saturday 2 to qualify for the Grand Final. Toowoomba Rangers were determined to make it this far in the season and also had to beat Goondiwindi to make an appearance. Toowoomba Rangers will have to work hard to hold out the Wheatmen's well drilled attack and even harder to break through their defence.

Toowoomba Bears will be the team to beat in the Women 7's Grand Final and either Warwick or Dalby will be contesting for the Emilee Cherry Cup at 2:45pm. Toowoomba Bears had a rocky season winning every carnival they competed in, however a lack of numbers towards the end of the season saw them forfeit 2 consecutive meetings. The Bears are now back on track and will be eager to take out the inaugural competition. Emilee Cherry herself will be presenting the winning side with the cup in her honour.

The main event, the Wagners Wellcamp Risdon Cup Grand Final, will be held at 3:30pm which will be the 2016 rematch of Goondiwindi Emus and Dalby Wheatmen. This thrilling match up will be full of action after a gruelling Super Saturday 2 which saw only penalty goals put points on the board between solid defence and illusive attack. Both sides are familiar with the Risdon Cup and will have already cleared a spot in their trophy cabinet, but only one side can take home the glory of the coveted item.
